I appeared in person at the Derby DL office to renew by driver license. When I finished the process I attempted to pay with a personal check. I had prepared for this beforehand because I knew they would impose a "service fee" if I used a debit or credit card. When I attempted to pay by check to avoid service fee clerk advised me I could not use my check because it had a check number of 200 and they would not accept a check with a check number below 300 because this was close to a "starter" check. I protested however they would not accept my check. I think this is a ridiculous requirement to make us pay a service charge and if they are going to impose this crazy requirement on us they need to publicize this. I paid using debit card and had a service charge in spite of all my planning. Stinks.

Please know you cannot use a check for payment if it has an out of state address for your DL. However it was perfectly ok to do so when registering my vehicles. When I attempted to use a credit card I was told, “too late”.
Fortunately I had cash on me which isn’t typical. So why don’t they have this posted or tell you before hand? They have many other rules so why not add this to the list. Plus, by the time all the paperwork is complete they know absolutely everything about a person so they easily be located if necessary. When I questioned this #6 very quickly developed an attitude.
