The North Carolina DMV and Months-Long Wait Times

Though everyone is working to make the pandemic a thing of the past, issues are still experienced from that period of chaos. One of the biggest problems many companies and public offices have to deal with is multiple backlogs that have caused long wait times.

If you need to access services provided by the DMV, you should keep in mind that you may have to wait for an extensive amount of time. As offices are still working to resume regular business, waiting to renew a driver’s license or register a vehicle can be as long as a few months. Residents of Raleigh, NC, have noted that these long wait times have made it challenging to update essential documents. They are seeking alternatives, including using the online portal for certain services.

Officials from the DMV in Raleigh have given a list of tips to help combat the lag that residents face when visiting the DMV:

  • Make an appointment: Schedule an appointment so that you know the day you will be able to visit the DMV and can plan accordingly.
  • Visit at certain times: The shortest wait times for walk-ins tend to be early in the morning or shortly after lunch. Also, when you walk in you can scan a code that will alert you about your upcoming turn.
  • Check further locations: While the locations within the city may be backed up, if you are willing to go outside of the city, there may be much shorter wait times at branches a little further away from you.
  • Visit a branch with extended hours: Some branches are open as early as 7 AM and close as late as 8 PM on certain days.

As the DMV works to improve its long wait times, residents of Raleigh will have to exhaust every resource available to them.
