SCDMV Unveils New Driver’s License and ID Card Design Showcasing State Pride

On July 30, 2025, the South Carolina Department of Motor Vehicles (SCDMV) unveiled a new design for driver’s licenses and identification cards. This redesign replaces the style first introduced in 2017 and aims to strengthen security while celebrating the Palmetto State’s heritage. The front of the cards features a vignette of the South Carolina Statehouse alongside a palmetto tree and crescent moon, motifs familiar from the state flag. The reverse side continues the theme with a full palmetto tree and crescent and includes stylized depictions of the state flower (yellow jessamine), the state bird (Carolina wren), and the state reptile (loggerhead sea turtle).
In addition to showcasing state pride, the new credentials incorporate advanced security features and a more durable construction. The cards are made from polycarbonate, a tough material that resists wear and cannot be peeled apart, and the holder’s photograph and personal data are laser‑engraved into the body of the card rather than printed on the surface. The redesign uses multiple colors, microtext, and tactile features to make counterfeiting significantly more difficult. According to SCDMV Executive Director Kevin Shwedo, the combination of improved security and state‑specific artwork means the cards will be “as attractive as they are secure,” reflecting South Carolina’s identity while protecting against identity theft and fraud.
The new credentials will be produced through a centralized issuance process rather than over‑the‑counter printing. Customers visiting an SCDMV branch will receive a temporary paper certificate valid for up to 30 days. Their permanent license or ID card will be printed at a secure facility and mailed to their address within about 15 business days. This centralized method allows the agency to maintain tighter control over production and quality while minimizing the risk of unauthorized tampering.
Existing licenses and ID cards will remain valid until their expiration dates, so customers do not need to replace them immediately. The fees for obtaining or renewing a license or ID card will not change with the introduction of the new design. SCDMV staff encourage residents to take pride in the updated credentials and to be patient with the temporary issuance process.
With its blend of enhanced security and rich symbolism, South Carolina’s new driver’s license and identification card design demonstrates the state’s commitment to protecting residents’ identities while celebrating what makes the Palmetto State unique. Customers can visit SCDMV offices or the agency’s website for more information about the new cards and to begin the renewal process if their current license or ID is approaching expiration.
