Renew a West Virginia Driver’s License or ID
You have until 6 months after your license expires to renew your license or ID, though it will NOT be valid after expiration. You can renew:
- Online.
OR
- In person.

Renew WV License or ID Online
The easiest way to renew a license or ID is online through the Division of Motor Vehicles (DMV) website. To renew online, visit the DMV online portal and provide:
- Your license or ID number.
- The last 4 digits of your social security number (SSN).
- Your credit or debit card information for payment.
Your new card will be mailed to your address after you complete your transaction.
Renew a West Virginia License or ID in Person
You can also renew a WV license or ID in person at a DMV office.
To renew in person, simply visit your local DMV office and provide your:
- Current license or ID OR renewal notice.
- Proof of legal name change (if applicable). This must be a court-issued document.
- 2 documents to prove your address (if it has changed since your last issuance).
- Payment for the renewal fee.
WV License or ID Renewal Fees
For a standard driver’s license or ID renewal, it costs $.50 + $5.00 for each year your license will be valid. Licenses expire when your age is divisible by 5 (e.g., 25 years old, 30 years old, 35 years old, 40 years old, etc.)
If you are 26 years old, your new license will expire at age 30 and you will owe $20.50.
If your license or ID has expired, an additional $5.00 fee will apply.
