Michigan REAL ID Requirements
It is NOT a requirement for all Michigan residents to obtain a REAL ID. However, beginning October 2021, a REAL ID or other federally accepted ID (such as a U.S. passport) will be required to:
- Enter certain federal facilities.
- Access nuclear power plants.
- Board a commercial aircraft (even for domestic flights).
If you already have a Michigan enhanced license, OR your ID has a star in the upper-right corner, your ID already satisfies REAL ID requirements. You can renew your license or ID the same way you would for a standard ID.
Obtaining a REAL ID for the first time must be done in person and requires some extra documentation.
