Maine REAL ID Requirements
REAL ID in Maine
Maine residents are not required to obtain a REAL ID. However, a REAL ID or another federally accepted ID (such as a passport) will be required in the future if you intend to:
- Board a plane (even for domestic flights).
- Enter a nuclear power plant.
- Enter certain federal facilities.
Maine licenses or non-driver IDs that are REAL ID-compliant have a star inside a picture of the state in the upper-right corner.
Maine REAL ID Requirements
Obtaining a Maine REAL ID requires a trip to your local Bureau of Motor Vehicles (BMV) office. Consider making an appointment beforehand.
At the office, you must provide*:
- Proof of identity and legal U.S. presence. This may include your:
- S. birth certificate.
- S. passport.
- Permanent resident card.
- Certificate of Naturalization.
- Your social security number (SSN) OR proof of ineligibility.
- 2 documents to prove ME residency. This may include your:
- Maine driver’s license or ID.
- W-2 tax form.
- Pay stub.
- Utility bill.
- Payment for the applicable fee.
If your current name does NOT match your identity documents, you must submit legal proof of your name change. This may include a*:
- Marriage certificate.
- Divorce decree.
- Court order.

Maine REAL ID Fees
A REAL ID costs more than a standard license or non-driver ID.
- REAL ID-compliant Class C license (under 65 years old): $55 (valid 6 years).
- REAL ID-compliant Class C license (65 years old or older): $40 (valid 4 years).
- REAL ID-compliant commercial driver’s license (CDL) (under 65 years old): $59 (valid 5 years).
- REAL ID-compliant CDL (65 years old and older): $47 (valid 4 years).
- REAL ID-compliant non-driver ID: $30 (valid 6 years).
