Connecticut Driver’s License Renewal

CT residents can renew a license or ID up to 6 months before and 2 years after expiration (late fee will apply).

Renew your CT driver’s license or ID in person at your local Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) office, express service center, or AAA office. Consider making an appointment to save time.

There, you’ll be asked to provide your:

  • Renewal notice (not required).
  • Current driver’s license or non-driver ID. If your card is lost you must prove your identity with other documentation.
  • Proof of name change if applicable. This may include a:
    • Marriage certificate.
    • Divorce decree.
    • Civil union certificate.
    • Probate court name change document.
  • Payment for the renewal fee.

Applying for a Connecticut REAL ID for the first time requires more documentation.

CT CDL Renewal

If you have a commercial driver’s license (CDL), you can ONLY renew at full-service DMV centers. Before renewal, CDL drivers must:

If your CDL is NOT a REAL ID, you will have to provide additional documents* to prove your:

  • Identity (2 documents required). This may include your:
    • U.S. passport.
    • U.S. birth certificate.
    • U.S. Certificate of Naturalization or Citizenship.
    • Social security card.
  • Connecticut residency (2 documents required). This may include a:
    • Bank statement.
    • Pay stub.
    • Credit card, utility, or hospital bill.
  • Social security number (SSN). This may include your:
    • Social security card.
    • W-2 or 1099 tax form (within the last 5 years).
    • Proof of ineligibility from the Social Security Administration (SSA).
  • Lawful U.S. presence. This may include:
    • U.S. passport.
    • I-94 form.
    • Permanent resident card.

Connecticut Driver’s License or ID Renewal Fees

Regular driver’s licenses and non-driver IDs are valid for either 6 or 8 years based on random generation. The renewal notice states how long your new license will be valid.

  • Driver’s license:
    • $72 for 6 years.
    • $96 for 8 years.
    • $24 for 2 years (optional for driver’s 65 years old and older).
  • Non-driver ID:
    • $24 for 6 years.
    • $32 for 8 years.
  • CDL renewal: $70 (valid 4 years).
