Wisconsin DMV Outlines Steps to Obtain Voter ID for Upcoming Elections

Default News Image

The Wisconsin Department of Transportation Division of Motor Vehicles (DMV) has provided guidance for voters who need an ID to show at the polls if they don't already possess a valid form of identification, such as a Wisconsin driver's license or ID. The state does not require a separate "voter ID" or REAL ID for voting purposes.

Voters seeking information on acceptable forms of ID for voting should consult the Wisconsin Elections Commission website. To obtain a first-time Wisconsin ID, individuals should visit the DMV's website at wisconsindmv.gov/idcards. The DMV provides these IDs free of charge if they are to be used for voting purposes.

To apply for a Wisconsin ID card, individuals should visit their nearest DMV office with the required documents, such as a birth certificate, proof of identity, and proof of Wisconsin residency. While appointments are available, they are not mandatory.

If applicants do not have all the necessary documentation, the DMV offers the ID Petition Process (IDPP), which allows individuals to obtain a receipt valid for voting while they gather the remaining documents or verifications.
