New Jersey MVC Announces Independence Day Closures for July 3-4, 2026

On July 3–4, the New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission (NJMVC) will close all licensing centers, vehicle centers, road test sites and inspection stations for the Independence Day holiday. The closure was announced in a June 30 press release. According to the announcement, all NJMVC facilities statewide will be closed on Friday, July 3, and Saturday, July 4, 2026. They will reopen for normal business hours on Monday, July 6. Because of the long weekend closure, customers are encouraged to plan ahead and use online services at NJMVC.gov to avoid delays.
During the closure, no driver knowledge or road tests will be administered, and no walk‑in or appointment services will be available at licensing centers or vehicle centers. Car owners will not be able to register vehicles, transfer titles, or complete in‑person transactions. Inspection stations run by the NJMVC will also be closed, meaning no emissions or safety inspections will be provided. The Commission reminds motorists that private inspection facilities are also closed for the holiday. However, the closure does not extend to law enforcement functions; troopers and local police will continue normal enforcement of traffic laws.
The NJMVC notes that many services can be completed online at any time, even when facilities are closed. Customers can renew or replace their driver license, non‑driver ID or vehicle registration; change their address; pay fees and surcharges; order personalized or specialty plates; schedule appointments; and obtain their driver history, all through the website. The Commission also offers a convenient “Vehicle Inspection Self‑Check” portal for certain renewals and a host of downloadable forms. A link to NJMVC’s online services and customer service chat is available at NJMVC.gov. The agency reminds customers that using the official site avoids unnecessary third‑party fees and ensures transactions are secure.
As New Jersey prepares to celebrate Independence Day, the NJMVC encourages drivers to plan early and enjoy the holiday safely. If you need to complete a motor vehicle transaction before the long weekend, schedule an appointment or visit a facility before July 3. Otherwise, consider using the online portal during the closure. All NJMVC locations will resume regular operations on Monday, July 6. For more information on services, locations, and hours, visit the Commission’s official website.
