Georgia DDS Announces Holiday Closures and Ft. Benning Maintenance

The Georgia Department of Driver Services (DDS) has alerted customers that all state DDS customer service centers will be closed Friday, July 3 and Saturday, July 4, 2026, in observance of the Independence Day holiday. In addition, the Ft. Benning Customer Service Center will shut its doors Wednesday, July 1 and Thursday, July 2 for building maintenance. These closures mean there will be no in‑person driver licensing or identification services available at any location across the state during that holiday period. Facilities will reopen on Monday, July 6 with regular hours.

For those with an expiring driver license or ID card, the DDS recommends taking advantage of its online services before the holiday. The agency’s website allows residents to renew licenses and ID cards, replace lost or stolen credentials, and update addresses. Customers can also schedule road tests, look up driving records, and check the status of Real ID documents. Many services can be completed online even when offices are closed, so planning ahead can save time.

The temporary closure at Ft. Benning is unrelated to the holiday; the agency says that location will be unavailable July 1–2 due to building maintenance. Customers who usually visit that center should make plans to visit an alternate office or utilize online services. DDS notes that its 67 customer service centers statewide typically experience higher volumes before holidays, so anyone who must handle business in person should arrive early or consider waiting until after the holiday rush.

Georgia continues to prepare for full enforcement of federal Real ID requirements, scheduled for May 2027, and encourages residents to upgrade to a Secure ID at renewal. Those who do not yet have a Secure ID should bring required documents—proof of identity, Social Security number and two proofs of Georgia residency—when visiting a DDS office. After obtaining a Secure ID, subsequent renewals can often be handled online.

Beyond licensing and identification, DDS reminds motorists to travel safely over the holiday weekend. The agency recommends checking vehicles before road trips, planning routes in advance and allowing extra travel time due to increased traffic. Customers can call DDS customer service or visit the website for more information about closures and available services. After the holiday, normal service hours will resume statewide.
