Wilmington DMV Reopens March 10 with Appointment-Only Service

On Tuesday, March 10 2026, the Delaware Division of Motor Vehicles will reopen its Wilmington service center for the first time since a December 2025 tragedy forced its closure. According to state officials, the facility will resume operations at 8:00 a.m. but services will be provided exclusively by appointment to help manage customer volume and enhance safety. Customers must use the online appointment system to secure a time slot.
The Wilmington DMV closure followed a tragic incident in December when a state trooper was killed at the site, leading to an extended closure for repairs and security improvements. The Division of Motor Vehicles worked with law enforcement to implement new safety measures at the facility. Over the last several months, DMV staff relocated employees and encouraged customers to visit alternative offices.
During the closure, the Delaware City, Dover and Georgetown DMV locations remained open for walk-in service. Officials say those offices will continue to accept walk-in customers after the Wilmington office reopens. The appointment-only system at Wilmington will allow the agency to control the number of people in the building at any given time. Customers can schedule appointments via the DMV’s website or by calling the agency. After selecting a service, users will receive a confirmation email with instructions. DMV officials urge customers to arrive 15 minutes early with required documents. They also remind visitors to comply with heightened security screening at the entrance, which could include bag checks and metal detectors.
The agency says all DMV services offered at Wilmington before the closure, such as license renewals, vehicle titling, registration, REAL ID issuance, testing and veterans services, will resume on March 10. Customers who prefer to avoid in-person visits can still renew registrations, order duplicate licenses and pay fees online or through DMV’s kiosks statewide. Officials expressed gratitude to Delaware residents for their patience during the closure and emphasized their commitment to providing first-class service while ensuring the safety of customers and employees. They encourage anyone needing to visit the Wilmington DMV to use the appointment system at appointments.dmv.de.gov as walk-ins will not be accommodated at that location.
