West Virginia DMV Encourages REAL ID Adoption Ahead of 2026 TSA Deadline

On Dec. 15, 2025 the West Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles urged residents to apply for a REAL ID ahead of a new federal identity screening deadline. Beginning Feb. 1, 2026, travelers will need a REAL ID–compliant driver’s license or identification card to board domestic flights and enter federal facilities. The Transportation Security Administration will impose a $45 fee during the first year for passengers who do not present a REAL ID.
The DMV reports that more than 63% of West Virginians have already updated their licenses to include the gold star symbol that denotes REAL ID compliance. While the majority of residents are prepared, DMV program manager Mike May cautions that tens of thousands still need to upgrade. “We’ve made great progress… but there is more work to do before the February 1 deadline,” May said.
Commissioner Everett Frazier echoed the call for early action. “Our goal is to ensure customers are ready to fly when the new federal requirement takes effect,” he said. “If you wait until the last minute you may face delays.” Frazier noted that the Real ID process generally takes just a few minutes for those who arrive prepared with the necessary documents. Applicants must bring a certified birth certificate or U.S. passport, proof of their Social Security number and two documents verifying West Virginia residency. There is a $10 fee to convert a standard driver’s license to REAL ID.
To streamline the process, the DMV offers a Real ID HeadStart program that lets customers upload documents online for pre‑approval. Once the documents are reviewed, participants receive a confirmation number to present at a DMV office, which reduces the time spent at the counter. West Virginia’s REAL ID can also be integrated into the state’s mobile ID app, allowing holders to securely store their license on a smartphone.
The DMV encourages residents to look for the gold star in the upper right corner of their card; if it’s absent, their license is not REAL ID‑compliant. Those needing to upgrade can schedule appointments at DMV regional offices or visit their county sheriff’s office. Residents should not wait until the last minute, as DMV offices expect heavy demand leading up to the Feb. 1 deadline.
Though a REAL ID is not required to drive, it is essential for domestic air travel and entry into secure federal buildings. West Virginians can visit the DMV website or call 304‑926‑3802 for a checklist of acceptable documents and to schedule an appointment. By planning ahead, travelers can avoid last‑minute fees and ensure they are prepared for next year’s TSA requirement.
