Weather Delays Keep Smithfield DMV Driver License Office Closed Until Aug. 18

On August 14, 2025, the North Carolina Division of Motor Vehicles announced that its Smithfield driver license office on U.S. Highway 310 South will remain closed through Friday, August 15, because bad weather has slowed needed maintenance. The building had been scheduled to reopen on Wednesday, but thunderstorms and heavy rain have delayed the repairs. According to a notice from NCDMV, the office will now reopen at 7 a.m. on Monday, August 18. Officials said that customers with appointments during the closure don’t need to do anything – their appointments have been automatically rescheduled.

During the closure, residents who need to renew a license, get a duplicate card or complete other transactions in person can visit nearby offices that remain open from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. The Clayton driver license office at 1665 Old U.S. Highway 70 West (Shotwell Station), the Goldsboro office at 701 West Grantham Street and the Garner office at 222 Forest Hills Drive are all operating as usual. Staff at these locations can process renewals, replacements, vision tests and other routine licensing transactions. Customers can also call ahead to confirm wait times and ensure the location offers the service they need.

DMV officials are urging customers to use NCDMV.gov to complete services online whenever possible. Many routine tasks, including renewing a driver license or ID card, requesting a duplicate license, updating an address and ordering a driver record, can be handled entirely online without visiting an office. Officials say using online services helps reduce congestion at local offices and ensures that in‑person appointments are available for those who truly need them.

The extended closure of the Smithfield office is unusual; the facility serves a large portion of Johnston County and the surrounding area. Local officials have not provided specific details about the maintenance work being performed or the scope of the weather‑related delays, but they stress that safety and proper maintenance are the top priorities. Residents are encouraged to monitor the NCDMV website or call customer service for updates on the reopening date and to confirm whether their services can be completed online or at another nearby location.
