Weather delays extend maintenance closure at North Carolina’s Smithfield DMV office

On August 14, 2025, the North Carolina Division of Motor Vehicles (NCDMV) issued an update about its Smithfield driver license office, informing customers that the facility would remain closed through Friday because severe weather had disrupted planned maintenance work. The office at 3783 U.S. Highway 310 South was originally scheduled to reopen on Wednesday, but persistent storms throughout the week slowed repairs and forced maintenance crews to delay completion of the project. Rather than open the facility before it is fully ready, officials decided to keep it closed for a few additional days to ensure that the building is safe for staff and customers.

The current round of work is part of a routine maintenance schedule intended to keep the office in good condition. NCDMV officials have not provided specifics about the repairs being undertaken, but they emphasized that the stormy weather prevented crews from operating equipment and completing the necessary tasks on time. Based on the updated schedule, the Smithfield office is now expected to reopen at 7 a.m. on Monday, August 18, once all repairs are completed and inspected.

Customers who booked appointments for driver license or ID services during the closure period do not need to call or reschedule; the DMV has automatically transferred those appointments to new dates after the office reopens. The agency will notify each affected customer of their revised appointment details. People needing immediate service before Monday, however, have several options. The Clayton driver license office (1665 Old U.S. Highway 70 West), the Goldsboro office (701 West Grantham Street) and the Garner office (222 Forest Hills Drive) all remain open from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. and can handle walk‑ins and scheduled appointments for most driver licensing transactions. NCDMV recommends checking appointment availability online because wait times can vary.

In addition to visiting alternative offices, North Carolinians are reminded that many DMV services can be completed online. Customers can renew or replace a driver license, update their address, request a driving record and perform other routine transactions through the state’s official website, NCDMV.gov. Using online services can save time and help avoid long waits, especially when physical offices are closed for maintenance or emergency reasons. NCDMV encourages residents to check the Smithfield office’s status and monitor any further updates through the DMV website or by contacting customer service. By planning ahead and utilizing alternate offices and digital options, residents can continue to access essential services while the Smithfield location undergoes weather‑related maintenance delays.
