Virginia DMV Unveils Refreshed Driver's License and ID Card Design with Enhanced Security Features
Richmond, VA - The Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) unveiled a refreshed design for the state's driver's licenses and ID cards today, showcasing iconic Virginia imagery and incorporating advanced security features to deter counterfeiting.
The new credentials feature a view of the Virginia State Capitol's rotunda dome, a departure from the previous design that displayed the Capitol's exterior. Additionally, the redesigned cards incorporate the Eastern Tiger Swallowtail butterfly, Virginia's official insect, and the American Dogwood, the state flower.
DMV Commissioner Gerald Lackey highlighted the significance of the new design, stating, "The attractive design elements are actually layers of state-of-the-art security features. Virginians can count on their DMV to provide secure credentials that stand the test of time."
The new cards retain some features from the previous design, including distinct banner colors for quick recognition – blue for driver's licenses and green for ID cards. Licenses and ID cards for adults continue to have a horizontal orientation, while those issued to individuals under 21 will be vertical.
Virginians applying for new licenses or ID cards, REAL ID, or renewing or replacing existing credentials will receive the updated design. Cards featuring the prior design will remain valid until their expiration date.
