You may need more time if you're trying to renew your license or get one for the first time. Vermont's DMV is trying to streamline the process by which they issue licenses, but their online services are no longer available because too many people are using them.

However, if you need new licensing and have decided to go through paper applications instead, the DMV will accept your application. Just remember that approvals don't usually happen immediately and can take up to several weeks, so it is advisable to have an alternative plan in case this doesn't work out for you.

Vermont's DMV is the same as any other state's, and it operates much the same way as in any other form. There are two main things that you need to know before submitting your application.

{01:34} "Right now, we're dealing with a significant backlog," said Julie Moore, spokesperson for the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV). The DMV estimates that they are currently processing applications from somewhere between 800 and 1,000 new license applicants a day, and as a result, it has become difficult for them to keep up.

{01:53} "A lot of people are trying to get their licenses," Moore said. "We're not processing that many now, so we are trying to ramp things down." So if the overload causes you problems, know it is a temporary issue. The DMV will still be issuing licenses, but it may take time before your application is approved.
