Update: Vineyard Road Bridge Over I-84 Closed for Repairs After Overheight Vehicle Damage

For travellers and local residents in the Magic Valley area, the Vineyard Road Bridge is a key link across Interstate 84 near Kimberly. Earlier this year it was struck by an over‑height vehicle, causing significant structural damage that forced officials to close the span to traffic. The Idaho Transportation Department (ITD) has now announced that crews will begin a comprehensive repair project next week to get the bridge back in service.

According to ITD, the repair project will begin Monday and involve replacing four damaged girders along with the entire bridge deck. Engineers determined that these components sustained the brunt of the impact from the over‑height load, and replacing them is the safest way to restore the bridge’s strength and longevity. The contractor will also address any additional structural issues discovered during construction and will bring the bridge up to current safety standards. The state estimates the repairs will cost around $605,000; under Idaho law the company responsible for the over‑height vehicle will be liable for reimbursing those costs.

Although Vineyard Road is currently closed over I 84, the freeway itself remains open to through traffic. Drivers travelling along the interstate may encounter occasional lane closures or reduced speeds while crews work overhead, but ITD does not anticipate long‑term disruptions on I‑84. For local traffic needing to cross the interstate, officials recommend using 3000 East or taking Addison Avenue to 3300 East as alternate routes. The agency has posted directional signage and encourages drivers to plan extra time for the detour, especially during the morning and afternoon commutes.

Project managers expect the work to be completed by mid‑December, weather permitting. Once the bridge reopens it will provide a vital east‑west link for farmers, commuters and emergency vehicles. ITD reminds operators of trucks and other large vehicles to review height restrictions and secure oversize permits before travelling. Striking a bridge with a load that is too tall can endanger motorists and leads to costly repairs and detours like the ones now required at Vineyard Road.

Throughout construction, the Idaho Transportation Department will provide updates via 511.idaho.gov and on social media. Motorists are encouraged to check those resources before travelling in the area. By following the detours, obeying posted speed limits and keeping an eye on project announcements, drivers can help ensure the repairs are completed safely and efficiently and that the Vineyard Road Bridge can reopen on schedule.
