Staff Shortage Leads to Closure of Nebraska DMV offices

The Department of Motor Vehicles cannot keep all its offices open for October since they are experiencing a staff shortage.

It was announced earlier in the week that at least a dozen offices will be closed at least once or twice during the month. Only one office will be open throughout due to the shortage.

The York DMV office’s closure date is Oct 14, while the Wahoo DMV office’s closure date is October 11th.

However, the Employees union of the state thinks that the biggest problem is low wages.
In an email sent by DMV director Rhonda Lahm,” "The Department of Motor Vehicles is experiencing the same staffing challenges as other private and public employers. The low unemployment rate and the current labor market have increased the difficulty in hiring and retaining employees."

She stated that the issue is never just one but a combination of multiple problems.
It has been an ongoing problem for the department for most of the year, with some offices being shut down and operating hours having to be shortened in the state.

Those who need a renewal of their driver’s license but don’t require taking a driver’s test should apply online. People can also go in person to any DMV office in their county of choice.

Those 72 years and above must undertake an in-person driving exam, while those from 21 to 71 only need to do the test every 15 years.

These changes are also part of an operation aimed at trying to help smoothen the process of licensing.
