San Pedro DMV Office Reopens After Flooding Repairs

On June 3, 2026, the California Department of Motor Vehicles reopened its San Pedro field office after it was forced to close in late April because of a significant water leak. According to the DMV, the April 30 flooding required crews to dry out the building, replace damaged drywall and flooring and perform thorough inspections to ensure that the facility was safe for employees and customers. After more than a month of repair work, the office is once again open to the public and offering all regular services, including driver license and identification card transactions, vehicle registrations and vehicle title services.
The DMV explained that the San Pedro office closure was necessary to protect staff and the public. In the announcement, officials said they appreciate customers’ patience and noted that the closure highlighted just how critical contingency plans are when unexpected events temporarily disrupt services. The agency pointed out that while the building was closed, customers still had access to more than 30 online services through the DMV’s website, including driver license renewals, address changes, vehicle registration renewals and Real ID appointment scheduling. Customers were also reminded that they can conduct many transactions via the DMV’s Service Advisor tool, which helps users determine whether they need an in‑person appointment or can complete their business online.
With the San Pedro location back in service, the DMV is encouraging residents who need to handle in‑person transactions — such as Real ID applications or tests that require a visit — to schedule an appointment ahead of time. The office is expected to see increased demand as local customers return to their neighborhood branch. DMV officials also emphasized the benefits of using online options whenever possible, noting that the agency has expanded digital services in recent years to make everyday transactions faster and more convenient. Californians can now renew vehicle registrations, order replacement plates or stickers and begin a driver license application online before finishing the process in person, reducing the amount of time spent at a field office.
The reopening of the San Pedro office also comes with a reminder about the ongoing federal Real ID deadline, which has been pushed to May 7, 2027. Residents who plan to use their driver license or ID card to board domestic flights or enter secure federal facilities should make an appointment to upgrade to a Real ID. By reopening the San Pedro DMV and highlighting online alternatives, California’s DMV hopes to provide flexibility for customers while ensuring that essential services continue without interruption.
