Same Day Service for Class D Driver's Licenses at Two Minnesota DMVs

Default News Image

For the first time in Minnesota, residents can get a standard D driver's license with same-day service in two locations. Residents can get a same-day license at the Dakota County License Center or the Clay County Motor Vehicles Department.

They can renew or replace their standard class D license or ID card. This pilot program, which started today, is part of a legislative initiative allowing residents to get a license in two locations with same-day services. These cards are unavailable at DVS exam stations or other driver's license offices.

Only same-day cards are allowed for Minnesota IDs, permits, and driver's licenses. A standard driver's license or permit is valid for most vehicles and comes with a motorcycle endorsement. No additional fee is charged for this type of card.
Residents should visit the website at drive.mn.gov for additional information about identification requirements and application fees. Some services are not offered for the same-day issue. These include:

•Commercial licenses and permits
•REAL ID permits, driver's licenses, or IDs
•Enhanced permits, driver's licenses, or IDs

Residents can't renew or replace an existing driver's license or ID card or get an enhanced one on the same day. They will need to go to a different place to get a standard one.

The pilot program aims to provide convenient and efficient services to Minnesota residents who want a same-day license. According to Pong Xiong, the DVS Director, the agency is committed to providing the best possible service to its customers.

The design and feel of a same-day issued license are slightly different from that of a traditional one due to the materials used in the printing process. This fact sheet explains the differences between the two types of cards.

Beginning May 3, 2023, residents in Minnesota will no longer be able to use a standard-issued driver's license or ID to board an airplane or enter federal facilities. To learn more about the new requirements, visit the official website of the Department of Public Safety.
