Renewal of DMV Disabled Person Parking Placards Required by June 30, New Law Changes Renewal Process

Handicap Placard required.

The online process for the renewal of long-held disabled person parking placards is now active; DMV urges holders to act before the deadline.

The Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) is reminding disabled person parking placard holders of the approaching June 30, 2023, deadline for renewing placards held for six or more years. The renewal process has changed, necessitating proactive action from placard holders to maintain their privileges.

New Law, New Process

The new law means automatic renewals for longtime placard holders will no longer occur. Instead, placards, which expire on June 30, 2023, must be renewed every six years. DMV Director Steve Gordon stresses, "The time is now for customers to complete their renewal and have their new parking placard mailed to them before the deadline.”

Easy and Accessible Renewals

Thankfully, the DMV has launched a comprehensive, fully online renewal process at dmv.ca.gov/DPP. Renewing is free, and a doctor’s note is unnecessary.

To renew, placard holders need to:

  1. Have their placard number or Renewal Identification Number (RIN).
  2. Visit DMV.ca.gov/dpp.
  3. E-sign their renewal.

“The DMV has made renewing as easy and accessible as possible through its new, completely online process,” added Gordon.

Avoiding Disruptions

Placard holders who miss the June 30 deadline will not have a valid placard and lose their rights to park in designated disabled person spots.

However, there is an alternative for those preferring to renew through traditional methods. Placard holders can sign and return the renewal notice they received in the mail to the DMV. Please note that postage is required for this option.

The DMV urges all eligible placard holders to act well before the deadline to ensure a smooth transition and maintain their parking privileges.
