Phoenix Loop 101 On‑Ramp at 27th Avenue to Close for 60‑Day Reconstruction

On Oct. 6, 2025 the Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) announced that the westbound Loop 101 Agua Fria Freeway on‑ramp at 27th Avenue in Phoenix will be closed for approximately two months. The ramp will shut down at 11:30 p.m. Monday, Oct. 6 so crews can reconstruct it as part of a larger freeway widening project west of Interstate 17. ADOT says the ramp closure is necessary to allow workers to remove and rebuild the on‑ramp structure and to tie it into new lanes that are being added along the freeway.

Drivers who normally use the westbound on‑ramp at 27th Avenue will need to plan ahead and use alternative routes. In its announcement, ADOT suggested that motorists consider entering the freeway at 35th Avenue while the ramp is closed. The agency expects the reconstructed on‑ramp to reopen in early December, but advises drivers to allow extra travel time and pay close attention to signs and workers in the construction zone.

The on‑ramp reconstruction is part of a $140 million project to widen Loop 101 between Interstate 17 and 75th Avenue. That project, which began in September 2024, will add one lane in each direction to improve capacity. In addition to adding lanes, crews will widen several bridges, improve frontage roads, build retaining and screen walls, and install upgraded freeway lighting. The improvements are designed to reduce congestion, improve safety and accommodate growth in the northwest Valley.

ADOT is managing the widening project in partnership with the cities of Phoenix, Glendale and Peoria, along with the Maricopa Association of Governments (MAG), which serves as the regional planning organization for the Phoenix metropolitan area. Funding for the reconstruction comes from Proposition 400, a countywide half‑cent sales tax for transportation approved by Maricopa County voters in 2004. The tax revenue is dedicated to projects that improve mobility and relieve bottlenecks on major roadways.

The Loop 101 widening project is scheduled to continue through spring 2027. ADOT encourages drivers to stay informed by visiting the project webpage at azdot.gov/loop101‑75th‑I‑17, which provides detour maps and construction updates. Motorists can also follow ADOT on social media for real‑time traffic alerts. By taking alternate routes during the two‑month closure and exercising patience, commuters can help keep workers safe and ensure that the long‑term benefits of the reconstruction — including smoother traffic flow and greater freeway capacity — are realized.
