Oregon DMV to Take DMV2U and Express Kiosks Offline for Early July System Upgrade

On June 3, 2026 the Oregon Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) notified drivers that it will temporarily shut down its self‑service platforms during the upcoming Fourth of July weekend to perform a major system upgrade. The DMV2U website, which allows Oregonians to renew vehicle registrations and handle more than 30 transactions online, and all DMV Express self‑service kiosks will be taken offline from July 3 through July 5. In addition, DMV field offices will be closed on Friday, July 3 in observance of the state holiday. The three‑day pause means that customers will be unable to renew their driver license, order a duplicate card or conduct registration transactions online or at a kiosk during that period【935294974988621†L34-L61】.

The agency explained that the upgrade is necessary to keep its core computer system current and ensure it integrates smoothly with law enforcement, courts and other partner systems. DMV Administrator Amy Joyce acknowledged that taking the system offline over a holiday weekend will be an inconvenience but said the agency wanted to give customers several weeks of advance notice so they can plan accordingly. “We know this will be a brief inconvenience,” Joyce said in the announcement, noting that the DMV selected the holiday period when offices are already closed to minimize disruption【935294974988621†L34-L61】. By scheduling the maintenance during a state holiday and weekend, the DMV hopes to avoid interfering with weekday transactions.

The system upgrade will apply to the Oregon Licensed and Identification and Vehicle Registration (OLIVR) computer system that went live in January 2019. OLIVR replaced decades‑old legacy software and paved the way for the DMV2U online portal launched in 2020. Today DMV2U offers more than thirty online services, from scheduling knowledge test appointments to changing your address or ordering a replacement license or ID. The DMV Express kiosks, rolled out statewide in 2025, allow customers to renew or replace vehicle registration cards and print new cards and stickers in minutes. The upcoming upgrade will update OLIVR’s software and keep kiosks and online services aligned【935294974988621†L34-L61】.

To avoid being caught off guard, drivers are encouraged to complete renewals or replacements before July 3 or wait until after July 5. Real ID applicants, in particular, should avoid scheduling appointments during the outage; the federal deadline for Real ID enforcement is May 7, 2027, so there is still plenty of time. Motorists planning summer road trips should verify that their registration and driver’s license are up to date well in advance of the holiday weekend. While offices, DMV2U and Express kiosks will be unavailable during the three‑day window, normal operations will resume on July 6. The DMV emphasizes that this proactive maintenance will help keep systems secure and reliable, ensuring Oregonians can continue to access modern online and self‑service options long after the upgrade【935294974988621†L34-L61】.
