Oakland Coliseum DMV Office to Reopen Nov. 10 Following Repairs

On November 7, 2025, the California Department of Motor Vehicles announced that its Oakland Coliseum Field Office will reopen to the public at 8 a.m. on Monday, November 10. The busy East Bay office, located at 501 85th Ave. adjacent to the Coliseum and Coliseum BART station, has been closed since mid‑April because thieves broke into the facility, stole copper piping and caused significant water damage. Staff have been relocated to nearby offices for months while emergency crews dried out the building and assessed the damage. In announcing the reopening, the DMV said it recognizes how important the Coliseum office is to customers in the region and thanked the community for their patience during the unexpected closure.
According to the agency, the five‑month repair project was comprehensive. Workers replaced the heating, ventilation and air conditioning system that was damaged when flooding soaked equipment, cleaned ducts to ensure air quality and replaced drywall, carpets and other infrastructure ruined by water. The DMV also installed new cubicles, repainted the lobby and added exterior fencing and other security enhancements to deter future vandalism. These upgrades mean the reopened office should be more resilient and comfortable for customers and employees. When doors open on Nov. 10, hours will return to 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday, with an earlier closure at 5 p.m. on Wednesdays.
Although the Coliseum field office is reopening, DMV officials continue to encourage customers to use online and self‑service options when possible. Californians can renew vehicle registration, request driver license or identification card replacements, and even start their REAL ID application at dmv.ca.gov or by using self‑service kiosks located in grocery stores and other field offices. In most cases, no in‑office visit is necessary, saving customers time and reducing wait times for those who require in‑person assistance. The agency reminds customers that by May 7, 2025, every air traveler age 18 or older will need a REAL ID‑compliant driver license or ID card, U.S. passport or other federally accepted document at airport security checkpoints.
For those who need to come in person, the rebuilt Oakland Coliseum DMV office will again offer the full range of services, including driver license and identification transactions, vehicle registration, title transfers and written knowledge tests. Customers can schedule appointments online to minimize their wait. Questions about the reopening may be directed to the DMV’s Public Affairs Office at (916) 657‑6437. After months of inconvenience, East Bay residents will soon have their local field office back — with improved facilities and added security designed to prevent another disruption.
