Nighttime Closures Planned on I-84 Near Gowen Road for Roadway Repairs

Drivers in the Boise area should prepare for nighttime closures of eastbound Interstate 84 near Gowen Road starting Friday as the Idaho Transportation Department continues repairs to address bumps on the roadway. The transportation department says the closures will happen nightly Monday through Thursday from 7 p.m. to 4 a.m. and on weekend nights Saturday and Sunday from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. During these periods, eastbound traffic will be diverted off I‑84 at the Gowen Road off‑ramp and then back onto the highway.

The detour is necessary to reconstruct about 250 feet of the eastbound approach to the Gowen Bridge and about 50 feet past the bridge. Crews will be adding new layers of cement‑treated base material to eliminate the bumps that have been causing discomfort and safety concerns for drivers. The repair project is part of an ongoing initiative to maintain Idaho’s highways and is expected to continue through the week. ITD warns motorists to expect delays and plan for extra travel time. Drivers should adhere to posted speed limits in the work zone and exercise caution around construction workers.

Travelers can visit the state’s 511.idaho.gov website or use the 511 mobile app for real‑time updates on the closure schedule and other traffic conditions【183223482797461†L27-L46】. The department encourages local commuters to consider alternate routes during the nighttime closures or to travel outside of the scheduled closure hours. Once completed, the reconstruction will provide a smoother driving surface and improve the long‑term durability of the interstate. The work underscores ITD’s ongoing efforts to invest in infrastructure and address maintenance needs before the fall season.

Motorists are reminded that these closures may lead to up to 20‑minute delays and should allow additional time, especially for early morning commuters returning to the highway. After this phase of the project is finished, additional night work may be scheduled later in the summer to apply surface treatments. The department will notify the public of further closures through its news releases and traffic alert system. Residents and businesses near Gowen Road may notice increased noise or lights during the nighttime work but will benefit from improved roadway conditions once repairs are complete. Drivers are urged to stay alert and follow the instructions of construction flaggers and road signs to ensure safety.
