New York DMV Unveils Commemorative License Plate Celebrating America's 250th Anniversary

New York motorists will soon have a patriotic new way to show their pride. On June 16, the New York State Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) unveiled a commemorative license plate honoring the United States’ upcoming 250th birthday. The license plate, which is available for passenger vehicles only, features an outline of the United States filled with stars and stripes and bears the phrase “United States of America 250.” It was unveiled at Peebles Island State Park in Waterford, where DMV officials and representatives from the New York 250th Commemoration Commission celebrated the approaching milestone. The DMV said the design is meant to inspire reflection on the nation’s founding and the freedoms Americans enjoy.
Acting DMV Commissioner Christian Jackstadt said the plate gives New Yorkers a chance to display their love of country while also supporting programs that preserve America’s history. “We’re excited to offer this plate to our customers, and we hope it serves as a reminder to all New Yorkers of the many freedoms we enjoy as Americans,” Jackstadt said in a statement. The plate joins a long list of specialty plates offered by the state, including those that honor veterans, law enforcement officers and various causes. The DMV noted that proceeds from the sale of the new plate will go to support celebrations and educational programs marking the 250th anniversary, which takes place in 2026.
Drivers interested in the plate can order it online at dmv.ny.gov or visit any DMV office statewide. The plate costs $60 for the first year, plus a $31.25 annual renewal fee, similar to other custom plate options. Customers can choose to personalize the plate with a combination of letters and numbers for an additional fee. Orders placed online will be mailed to drivers, while those processed in a DMV office can be picked up there or mailed. Because the plate is limited to passenger vehicles, it is not available for motorcycles, trailers or commercial vehicles.
The DMV recommends ordering early to ensure delivery before July 4 festivities. In addition to the new plate, the DMV encourages residents to visit its website for information on Real ID requirements, vehicle registration and other services. Many transactions can be completed online without visiting an office, and the agency continues to expand its digital offerings to serve customers more efficiently.
