New Mexico Vehicle Registration and Weight-Distance Tax Increases Take Effect July 1

The New Mexico Taxation and Revenue Department and its Motor Vehicle Division (MVD) announced a significant change to vehicle-related fees that will take effect on July 1, 2026.  In a press release issued June 29, the agencies explained that passenger vehicle registration fees will rise by 25 percent and the weight‑distance tax paid by commercial trucking firms will increase by 35 percent【676840529920908†L13-L37】.  These changes are part of a broader effort to generate additional revenue for maintaining and improving the state’s aging roadways and bridges.

According to the release, the base annual registration fee for passenger vehicles will go from roughly $26 to between $26 and $70, depending on the vehicle’s weight.  Motorcycles and off‑highway vehicles will not see an increase.  Commercial carriers with trucks over 26,000 pounds will see their weight‑distance tax rise by 35 percent【676840529920908†L13-L37】.  State officials project that the combined increases will generate approximately $70 million per year for road maintenance and construction【676840529920908†L13-L37】.  The last time New Mexico adjusted registration fees was 2004; officials said the new rates reflect inflation and rising construction costs.

Stephanie Schardin Clarke, Cabinet Secretary for the Taxation and Revenue Department, said the revenue is critically needed to address deteriorating infrastructure.  The New Mexico Department of Transportation maintains more than 30,000 lane-miles of roadway and thousands of bridges, many of which require repair or replacement.  Recent legislative sessions authorized the fee increases to ensure the state can keep pace with maintenance needs without shifting costs solely to general taxpayers.  MVD Director Andy House added that the weight‑distance tax increase aligns New Mexico’s rates with neighboring states and ensures that out‑of‑state trucking companies pay their fair share for using New Mexico roads.

In addition to raising fees, the MVD is encouraging drivers to renew online through its MVD Online portal.  Customers who renew their registration online can take advantage of a 5 percent discount, helping to offset some of the increased cost【676840529920908†L13-L37】.  The agency noted that online renewals are convenient and help reduce wait times at MVD offices.  For customers who need to visit in person, MVD offices will remain open with normal hours.

Drivers and trucking operators should prepare for the new rates to be reflected on renewal notices and permits issued on or after July 1.  Off‑highway vehicles, trailers and certain specialized vehicles are not subject to the increases.  Motorists are advised to check the MVD website for updated fee schedules and to renew early if possible.  The additional revenue, officials say, will be invested directly into highway maintenance and improvements, benefiting all road users across New Mexico【676840529920908†L13-L37】.
