New Jersey MVC to close all facilities Sept. 1 for state holiday; regular operations continue the rest of the week
The New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission (NJMVC) announced this week that all of its facilities will be closed on Monday, Sept. 1, in observance of a state holiday. A notice published on Aug. 28 on the commission’s news site explains that licensing centers, regional service centers, road test locations and inspection facilities will all be shuttered for the day as employees observe the holiday. The closure will affect all in‑person customer services, and there will be no staff available to handle license renewals, vehicle registrations, title transfers or other transactions. Customers who had previously scheduled appointments for Sept. 1 will be contacted by the commission to reschedule.
Officials stressed that the one‑day closure should not disrupt services for the rest of the week. All NJMVC agencies will operate on their normal schedule before the holiday and will reopen on Tuesday, Sept. 2. Most locations, including licensing centers and road test sites, will also be open on Saturday, Aug. 30, providing customers with additional opportunities to take care of their motor vehicle business. Because the commission works on an appointment‑only basis, customers are strongly encouraged to schedule appointments ahead of time for any in‑person transaction. Walk‑in services are generally not available, and arriving without an appointment will likely result in being turned away.
While the offices are closed, many transactions can be completed online. The commission reminds drivers and vehicle owners that the NJMVC website is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week to handle most routine transactions, including renewing or replacing a driver’s license, renewing a vehicle registration, changing an address and ordering duplicate titles. Customers can also visit the website to schedule, reschedule or cancel appointments, check the status of their driver’s license or registration, and review a checklist of documents required for a Real ID upgrade.
