Nebraska DMV offices closed mid-August due to staffing shortages

The Nebraska Department of Motor Vehicles has announced several temporary closures of its Driver Licensing Offices in August 2025 because of ongoing staffing shortages. An update posted on the agency’s Driver Licensing Offices Closings page shows that the Fremont office will be closed on July 25 and on August 1, 8, 13, 14, 15 and 29, while the Madison office will be closed on August 5, 6, 12, 13 and 15. These closures mean that residents planning to renew a driver’s license or obtain an ID card on those dates will need to visit another location or reschedule.
The closure list notes that other offices are also affected. The Tekamah office in Burt County will not operate on August 5 and 12, and additional offices across the state have scattered closures throughout the month. The DMV warns that more dates may be added as staffing levels fluctuate. Customers with appointments on the affected days should check the closures schedule before travelling and be prepared to visit a different office if necessary.
To reduce inconvenience, the DMV encourages residents to use online services whenever possible. Many transactions—including driver’s license renewals, replacement credentials and address changes—can be completed through the state’s online portal at dmv.nebraska.gov. Those who need in‑person service should make appointments at an office that remains open and confirm hours of operation beforehand. The department is working to hire and train additional staff to restore normal operations.
