Drivers in North Carolina’s Outer Banks should be aware of a temporary closure affecting the Nags Head driver license office. The N.C. Division of Motor Vehicles announced on Dec. 14, 2025 that the office at 2808 South Croatan Highway in Nags Head has closed for approximately two weeks to allow critical building maintenance. The closure took effect immediately and is expected to last until Monday, Dec. 29, when the office reopens on its regular schedule.

Customers who had appointments during the closure period were contacted and rescheduled. The DMV encourages residents to use the agency’s online services at NCDMV.gov for routine renewals and address changes. For services that require an in‑person visit, such as first‑time license issuance or Real ID conversions, the agency recommends visiting nearby driver license offices. The announcement lists several alternatives: the Elizabeth City office at 1164 U.S. Highway 17 is open weekdays from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., the Edenton office at 307 West Freemason Street operates from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., the Williamston office at 305 East Main Street, Suite 116 is open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., and the Washington office at 1821 Carolina Avenue/U.S. Highway 17 has a 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. schedule. The DMV reminds customers that all offices will be closed Dec. 24‑26 for the Christmas holiday.

According to the agency, the two‑week maintenance project will improve building systems at the Nags Head office and address issues that could affect service delivery. While the DMV did not specify the exact nature of the work, agency officials apologized for the inconvenience and thanked customers for their patience. “We want customers to know that they can still handle most transactions online and that our nearby offices are ready to assist with any in‑person needs,” the division said. Appointment schedules at the alternative locations were expanded to accommodate additional customers, and wait times may be longer than usual during the closure.

Residents who need to check licensing or registration deadlines are encouraged to use the office locator and appointment scheduling tools on the DMV website. The department says that staying informed will help avoid last‑minute delays around the holidays. The Nags Head office closure is a reminder that facilities occasionally need upgrades to continue providing safe and efficient service. Drivers should plan ahead, take advantage of online options, and visit nearby offices if necessary until service resumes in Nags Head on Dec. 29.
