Michigan's Taylor Secretary of State Office to Close Oct. 6‑20 for Remodeling

The Michigan Department of State has announced that its Taylor Secretary of State branch office will temporarily close for two weeks in October so crews can complete a long‑overdue remodel. The branch, located at 21572 Ecorse Road in Taylor, will shut its doors after business hours on Friday, Oct. 3 and remain closed from Monday, Oct. 6 until reopening on Monday, Oct. 20. During that time, workers will remove old carpet, install new flooring and partitions and add plexiglass barriers to create a more modern and efficient environment for customers and staff.
Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson said the investment is part of her administration’s broader effort to modernize branch offices and reduce wait times. In recent years the department has more than doubled the number of services available online, allowing customers to renew their driver’s licenses, identification cards, license plates and vehicle titles without visiting an office. Officials are reminding customers that most routine transactions can be completed at Michigan.gov/SOS or by mail. Residents can also use one of the department’s self‑service stations to renew plates and obtain tabs.
Two self‑service kiosks are available in the Taylor area: one in the Kroger grocery store at 7000 Monroe Boulevard and another at the Allen Park Recreation Center. These machines are open extended hours, and they process transactions in multiple languages. Customers who still need in‑person assistance should schedule an appointment at a nearby branch. The closest Secretary of State offices are in Inkster at 26603 Michigan Avenue and Brownstown Township at 18182 Telegraph Road. Both offices are open 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday, and from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Wednesdays.
Benson encouraged residents to take advantage of online and kiosk services during the Taylor closure. She noted that the temporary inconvenience will result in a significantly improved customer experience once the branch reopens. “Our goal is to provide Michigan residents with convenient, efficient service whether they visit us in person or complete their business remotely,” Benson said when announcing the project. The department will post updates on the progress of the remodel and remind customers of alternative service options via its website and social media channels.
