Maui DMV Offices Closed Aug. 22 for Staff Training; Reopen Aug. 25

On Aug. 18, 2025, the County of Maui’s Division of Motor Vehicles and Licensing (DMVL) announced that all DMVL offices across Maui County – including locations on Maui, Molokaʻi and Lanaʼi – will be closed to the public on Friday, Aug. 22 so staff can take part in a day of intensive training. The one-day closure will enable employees to receive updated instruction on new systems and customer service procedures that are being rolled out ahead of the busy fall travel season. DMVL offices will reopen for normal business hours on Monday, Aug. 25. Customers who already booked appointments for Aug. 22 will be contacted to reschedule, and those with urgent needs are encouraged to call the DMVL call center for assistance.
During the closure, officials encourage residents to take advantage of online services. Many transactions – such as vehicle registration renewals, duplicate title requests and road test scheduling – can be completed from home via the county's secure web portal. The DMVL noted that the online road-test booking system, which experienced a temporary outage earlier this month, has been fully restored and is accepting appointments again. This means students preparing for behind‑the‑wheel exams can still secure a slot even while offices are closed.
Maui is also participating in statewide initiatives that aim to modernize driver licensing. Residents can now add their Hawaiʻi driver’s license or state ID card to Apple Wallet, creating a convenient digital credential that is accepted at participating TSA checkpoints and select businesses. In addition, Hawaiʻi recently launched an online Class 3 knowledge test that allows aspiring drivers to take the learner’s permit exam from home. Applicants who pass can then schedule an in‑person visit for a photo and vision check.
By combining expanded digital services with staff training, Maui’s DMVL hopes to reduce wait times and improve customer service. Motorists should plan ahead for the Aug. 22 closure, complete renewals online where possible and contact the DMVL call center if they have questions about appointments or the new digital ID options.
