Maryland MVA Offices to Close June 19 for Juneteenth Holiday

The Juneteenth holiday, which commemorates the end of slavery in the United States, has been a state holiday in Maryland for several years and became a federal holiday in 2021. Each year on June 19, state agencies adjust their schedules so that employees and members of the public can participate in Juneteenth celebrations, community events and educational programs. For drivers and vehicle owners, those adjustments include temporary changes to the hours of the Maryland Motor Vehicle Administration (MVA), which is part of the Maryland Department of Transportation.

In a news release this week the Maryland Department of Transportation MVA announced that all of its branch offices and Vehicle Emissions Inspection Program (VEIP) stations will be closed on Friday, June 19, 2026 in observance of the Juneteenth holiday. The closure also applies to the agency’s Customer Service Center and its social‑media customer service channels. Normal operations will resume on Saturday, June 20. Marylanders who have business at an MVA branch or need to have their vehicle inspected are urged to plan ahead and either visit prior to the holiday or schedule their trip for the following day. Those who had scheduled in‑person appointments for June 19 should reschedule through the MVA’s online appointment system.

MVA officials emphasize that essential services remain available even when offices are closed. During the holiday closure, customers can visit the myMVA Online Services portal to complete more than two dozen transactions at any time of day, including renewing vehicle registration, ordering duplicate driver’s licenses, updating an address, checking insurance compliance and paying fees. Motorists who only need to have their vehicle emissions checked can use one of the self‑service VEIP kiosks located throughout the state. These kiosks operate 24/7 and allow customers to conduct a quick emissions test without an appointment; instructions are displayed on‑screen and the process typically takes just a few minutes.

The agency also reminds Marylanders of the upcoming REAL ID enforcement deadline. Beginning May 7, 2027, federal law will require a REAL ID‑compliant credential for anyone who wants to fly domestically or enter certain federal facilities. The MVA recommends that residents review the list of required documents—such as proof of identity, Social Security number and Maryland residency—so that they can gather them ahead of their appointment. Completing as many transactions as possible online or at a kiosk will help minimize wait times when branch offices reopen.

Juneteenth is a day of reflection and celebration, and MDOT’s MVA encourages customers to take advantage of digital services so that staff can observe the holiday. By offering online renewals, call center resources, and self‑service kiosks, the agency aims to balance convenience with respect for the newest federal holiday. Drivers who need assistance can contact the MVA call center beginning Monday, June 22, or visit mva.maryland.gov for more information.
