Louisiana Revenue Department Opens Help Desk at Lafayette OMV to Clear License Suspensions
On August 26, 2025, the Louisiana Department of Revenue (LDR) announced that it has stationed a team of tax specialists at the Office of Motor Vehicles (OMV) in Lafayette to help drivers resolve license suspensions that stem from unpaid state taxes and debts. The partnership, which operates out of the OMV office at 3241 N.W. Evangeline Thruway, Suite A, is designed to make it easier for Lafayette-area residents to pay outstanding liabilities and quickly regain their driving privileges. According to the agency, the satellite help desk will operate during regular OMV business hours and is staffed by LDR employees who can review taxpayers’ accounts on site, collect payments and set up payment plans as allowed by law. LDR stresses that no personal data is exposed and that all transactions are secure.
Drivers who have had their license privileges suspended because of unpaid taxes or debts referred to the Office of Debt Recovery often discover the problem only after receiving a suspension notice from OMV. Previously, these customers had to travel to a Revenue office in Baton Rouge or file documents by mail to clear the debt before returning to OMV to reinstate their license. By placing tax officers directly in the Lafayette OMV branch, the state hopes to streamline the process. Individuals visiting the help desk should be prepared to provide identification and any correspondence they have received regarding their suspension. Staff can verify the outstanding balance, accept payments by check, money order or credit card and, when appropriate, arrange installment agreements so customers can restore their licenses quickly while continuing to pay what they owe.
The Lafayette location is only the second of its kind in Louisiana; the first tax assistance desk opened in Lake Charles last year. Officials say that pilot was well received and allowed hundreds of drivers in southwest Louisiana to resolve suspensions in a single visit. Expanding the program to Lafayette builds on that success and reflects the state’s broader push to modernize customer service. The agencies note that these satellite desks are intended solely for issues related to driver’s license suspensions. Taxpayers with questions about income tax returns, business taxes or other matters must still visit a full-service LDR office or contact the department’s general assistance line. Similarly, OMV personnel cannot answer tax-related questions or accept tax documents.
LDR encourages anyone who believes their driver’s license may be suspended due to unpaid state taxes to check the status of their account before heading to the OMV. Taxpayers can review notices they have received or log into their Louisiana Taxpayer Access Point (LaTAP) account online to see if they owe the state money. Those who cannot get to the Lafayette office can still resolve suspensions by calling the department’s customer service line and arranging payment over the phone or by mail. In announcing the Lafayette partnership, LDR reminded the public that staff at the OMV site cannot handle routine questions about tax refunds or filings.
