IRP Appointments Unavailable at Alexandria OMV Office Aug. 25-29

The Louisiana Office of Motor Vehicles has alerted customers that International Registration Plan (IRP) appointments will not be available at its Alexandria field office during the week of Monday, Aug. 25 through Friday, Aug. 29. In a notice posted on its OMV alerts page, the agency said that commercial motor carriers should make alternate arrangements for IRP services during that five‑day period【860259213958514†screenshot】.
The IRP is a cooperative agreement among U.S. states, the District of Columbia and Canadian provinces that allows interstate trucking companies to register their fleets in a single jurisdiction and pay apportioned registration fees based on the miles driven in each jurisdiction. Because the program deals with oversized vehicles and multi‑state fee calculations, it is handled only at select Louisiana OMV locations by appointment. OMV staff have not publicly explained the reason for the temporary suspension in Alexandria, but it may be related to staffing constraints or system upgrades.
Carriers who need to renew or modify their apportion plates, add new vehicles to their fleet or complete other IRP transactions should schedule appointments at another OMV field office that provides IRP services. Locations such as Baton Rouge, Shreveport, Lake Charles and Lafayette typically handle these transactions. Customers can use the OMV website to find a list of participating offices and book appointments online. For some routine transactions, mailing documents or using OMV’s online portal may be an option.
It is important to note that the suspension applies only to IRP appointments. The Alexandria office will remain open for other motor vehicle services, including driver licenses, vehicle titling, registration renewals and Real ID issuance. Customers with questions about where to obtain IRP services can call the OMV Commercial Division at 225‑925‑6146 or visit omv.la.gov for detailed instructions. The OMV advises carriers to plan ahead because IRP transactions often take longer than standard in‑office visits and same‑day appointments may not be available at alternate locations.
Failure to keep IRP accounts current can result in fines or out‑of‑service orders in other states, so carriers should not delay renewing their apportioned plates. The Louisiana OMV apologizes for any inconvenience caused by the temporary unavailability of IRP appointments at the Alexandria office and expects to resume normal IRP operations after Aug. 29. Updates about service changes will be posted on the OMV alerts page, and customers can subscribe to the agency’s email notifications to stay informed.
