Iowa DOT relocating Marshalltown Driver License Service Center to new May Street location

On June 26, 2026 the Iowa Department of Transportation announced that its Marshalltown Driver License Service Center will soon relocate to a new, more centrally located facility. The service center currently operates out of 3700 South Center Street, but it will close at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, July 1 so staff can pack up equipment and prepare for the move. The new facility, located at 704 May Street near the Marshalltown Community College campus, is scheduled to open its doors on Monday, July 6. By giving customers advance notice, Iowa DOT hopes to minimize disruptions and allow residents to plan their visits accordingly.
According to the department, the new location was selected to better meet the needs of local residents. The May Street site is closer to the heart of Marshalltown, offers better access via public transportation, and includes improved parking and a more spacious lobby. It will also provide modern exam lanes for behind‑the‑wheel tests and a more efficient interior layout that should reduce wait times. The move is part of Iowa DOT’s ongoing efforts to modernize its driver services and respond to population shifts within Marshall County. During the closure period from July 2 through July 5, no driver license services will be available in Marshalltown, so customers should plan to visit before July 1 or wait until the new office opens.
DOT officials encourage anyone who needs a driver’s license or identification card to schedule an appointment online at https://iowadot.gov/ before visiting. Appointments help manage customer flow and ensure that everyone is served promptly. Walk‑in customers may be accommodated if time permits, but those with appointments will have priority. The department also reminds residents that many services, such as license renewals, address changes and driving record requests, can be completed online or by mail. Only services that require an in‑person visit—like new licenses, Real ID upgrades or knowledge tests—require a trip to a service center.
The announcement of the relocation comes amid broader improvements to driver licensing services across Iowa. By investing in new facilities and technology, the Iowa DOT aims to create a more customer‑friendly experience while maintaining high safety and security standards. Moving to the May Street location is expected to be a long‑term solution that will accommodate future growth in Marshalltown. Residents should keep an eye on the Iowa DOT website and local media for any updates, and they can reach the department’s customer service line with questions about the relocation or driver services in general.
