Illinois Driver's License And ID Card Expiration Extension Ends On Dec. 1, 2022

The Illinois Secretary of State's office recently sent out a reminder that the expiration extension for driver's licenses and ID cards ends on Dec. 1, 2022. The extension, which was put in place due to the COVID-19 pandemic, means that driver's licenses and ID cards expired on or after March 1, 2020, will remain valid until December 1, 2022.

The secretary of state's office urges people to plan and renew their licenses and ID cards before expiration. Those who renew after the extension period must retake the written and road tests to get a new license. Customers with an expiration date of Dec. 2, 2020, or later will need to renew their license or ID card by the expiration date.

If you need to renew your license or ID card, you can do it online, by email, or in person at a Secretary of State office. To renew online or by mail, you must provide your name, date of birth, driver's license number, Social Security number, and email address. You will also need to provide the payment for the renewal fee. In-person renewals require that you bring your current license or ID card, proof of identity (such as a passport or birth certificate), and payment for the renewal fee.

The Secretary of State's office recommends customers renew online at cyberdriveillinois.com to avoid long lines at Driver Services facilities. If you need to visit a facility, please check here SOS offices of Illinois | DMV Appointments.
