Illinois Drivers: Don’t Forget to Renew Your License This Week!

Default News Image

No more extensions are available for expired Illinois driver's licenses or ID cards. Renew your license or ID card as soon as possible. If your driver's license is expired and you're from Illinois, don't fret. The Secretary of State extended the renewal period multiple times in 2020 because of pandemic-related circumstances. Therefore, as long as cardholders renew soon, they won't be fined or accumulate a misdemeanor charge on their record.

Driver's license and ID card renewals can be completed online, in person at a Secretary of State office, or by mail. Those who choose to renew online should have their signature from the original license and a valid credit or debit card on hand. Additionally, applicants must pay applicable fees, such as late renewal fines.

In-person renewal is available at all Secretary of State offices, but lines may be longer due to the influx of cardholders needing to renew. Individuals are strongly encouraged to make an appointment online to skip the line and get in and out quickly to expedite the process. Lastly, by-mail renewal must include a valid signature and check or money order for the appropriate application fees.

So don't procrastinate any longer! Renew your license or ID card before the deadline this week. Doing so will keep you in compliance with Illinois law and also ensure you have a valid driver's license or identification card when needed. Contact your local Secretary of State office for any questions.
