Idaho DMV Encourages Treasure Valley Residents to Renew Driver Licenses Online

The Idaho Division of Motor Vehicles is asking Treasure Valley residents to rethink the traditional trip to the DMV and take advantage of online driver license renewals available at dmv.idaho.gov. In a news release issued June 16, 2026, the agency said customers who renew their licenses online save $5 compared to in‑office service and help reduce congestion at local DMV offices, allowing staff to focus on people who must be served in person.

The DMV explained that most Idahoans qualify to renew online. To be eligible, drivers must be U.S. citizens or lawful permanent residents, have licenses that have not been expired for more than 24 months, be between the ages of 18 and 66, and have had no recent changes to their vision or ability to drive safely. Star Card holders — Idaho’s version of the REAL ID — who are renewing can also complete the process online. First‑time applications for a Star Card, however, must be handled in person because additional documentation is required.

Officials noted that the Treasure Valley region has experienced significant growth, which has led to increased demand at area DMVs. By choosing to renew online, customers can avoid lines and free up appointment slots for individuals who need services such as first‑time licenses, commercial driver testing or complex transactions. The DMV said the $5 discount offered for online renewals is another incentive meant to encourage customers to “skip the trip.” The online portal guides users through the renewal process, allows them to update their address, and accepts secure payment methods. Once processed, new license cards arrive in the mail within 10 to 14 days.

Renewing online is not just convenient for customers; it also supports DMV employees who often face heavy workloads. The agency emphasized that staff members appreciate fewer walk‑in renewals, as it allows them to focus more time on customers who require hands‑on assistance.

To see if you qualify for an online renewal, visit dmv.idaho.gov and click “Renew Driver’s License.” The website provides a simple checklist of eligibility requirements and answers to frequently asked questions. Treasure Valley residents who prefer in‑person service can still schedule appointments, but the DMV hopes more people will discover that renewing online is quick, secure and saves both time and money.
