Idaho DMV announces updated proof-of-identity requirements effective July 1

On June 26, 2026 the Idaho Transportation Department issued a press release announcing that its Division of Motor Vehicles will adopt new proof‑of‑identity requirements for anyone conducting DMV transactions.  The announcement, which comes ahead of a July 1 effective date, said customers will have to present an unexpired government‑issued photo ID that shows the person’s full legal name and date of birth.  According to the department, the goal is to tighten identity verification, reduce the risk of fraud and make it easier for Idahoans to receive Real ID‑compliant documents.

The updated policy lists several acceptable forms of identification.  These include a driver’s license or identification card issued by any state that is compliant with the U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s REAL ID Act, a U.S. passport or passport card, a U.S. military ID or Idaho concealed weapons permit, and photo IDs issued by the Bureau of Indian Affairs or by federally recognized tribal governments.  Correctional photo IDs from the U.S. or any state and Mexican Consulate identification cards will also be accepted.  Officials stressed that all IDs must be current and bear the bearer’s legal name and photo.  For customers who use a document that lacks a photo, such as a certified birth certificate or letter of identity from a consulate, the DMV will require an additional photo ID such as a student ID card, credit card or work badge to verify identity.  Foreign passports must be accompanied by DHS or U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services documents proving lawful presence.

Special provisions apply for minors.  Sixteen‑ and seventeen‑year‑olds seeking a driver’s license or identification card must provide their instruction permit, driver’s training permit or a U.S. passport.  Children under 16 must present a Social Security card, original birth certificate and proof of identity for a parent or legal guardian.  The DMV noted that bringing the proper paperwork to a DMV office will save time and prevent the need for multiple visits.  Customers are encouraged to review the new requirements on the Idaho DMV website or call 208‑584‑4343 for assistance.

These changes reflect the DMV’s ongoing efforts to modernize its services and prepare for full enforcement of Real ID at airports and federal facilities.  By standardizing the identity documents it accepts, Idaho hopes to improve security for its residents while speeding up transactions at county motor vehicle offices.  The department also reminds residents that many services, such as vehicle registrations and some license renewals, can be completed online.  However, when visiting an office in person, customers should be ready with the necessary documents to ensure a smooth experience.
