Georgians Reminded to Keep Physical Driver’s Licenses Handy Despite Launch of Digital IDs

The Georgia Department of Driver Services (DDS) has issued a timely reminder to residents: continue carrying your physical driver's licenses, even with the advent of digital driver's licenses and IDs.

The directive comes in the wake of the recent launch of the Georgia Digital Driver’s License and ID, which is currently accepted at select Transportation Security Administration (TSA) security checkpoints. However, DDS Commissioner Spencer R. Moore cautions residents that physical driver's licenses are still required during roadside encounters with law enforcement.

“If stopped by law enforcement, customers will be required to display their physical driver’s licenses," said Moore. "Law enforcement officials do not accept Digital Driver’s Licenses at this time."

With the busy holiday weekend fast approaching, the DDS emphasizes the necessity of carrying a hard copy of your Georgia driver’s license or ID when traveling by road.

“DPS is excited that the Department of Driver Services has adopted a digital driver’s license for travel by air, but a physical license must be available for travel by roadway," said Colonel Christopher C. Wright.

According to the Official Code of Georgia, 40-5-29, "Every licensee shall have his or her driver’s license in his or her immediate possession at all times when operating a motor vehicle."

While digital driver's licenses are gaining popularity, the DDS urges patience and adherence to current legal requirements as the state moves forward with its digital ID pilot program.
