Georgia Unveils Digital Driver's License and ID for Android Users via Google Wallet
Georgia's Department of Driver Services (DDS) has marked a significant advancement with the launch of the Digital Driver's License and ID in Google Wallet for Android users. The initiative, lauded by Commissioner Spencer R. Moore and Governor Brian Kemp, seeks to modernize identification processes for Georgians. The digital IDs can now be used at select TSA PreCheck® security checkpoints, including Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, offering a secure and streamlined experience for travelers.
Commissioner Spencer R. Moore of the Georgia Department of Driver Services (DDS) announced the release of the Georgia Digital Driver's License and ID in Google Wallet, a step towards digital identification that will enable residents to present their digital ID at select Transportation Security Administration (TSA) PreCheck® security checkpoints. This feature is now accessible within the premises of Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport among others.
Governor Brian Kemp conveyed his enthusiasm over this advancement, stating, “Across the state, Georgians expressed overwhelming excitement over the initial rollout of this new option and today’s announcement is another exciting step forward in Georgia’s mission to provide cutting-edge technology to its citizens. We look forward to the continued rollout of this program and its growth in the days and years ahead.”
The inclusion of a digital driver’s license or ID in Google Wallet is voluntary and comes at no extra cost to the users. However, the DDS reminded citizens that carrying a physical copy of their driver’s license or ID remains a necessity.
Expressing his optimism over this collaborative initiative with Google Wallet, Commissioner Moore mentioned, "We believe that digital identification is the future for enhanced safeguarding of identity and our collaboration with Google Wallet is a big leap in that direction. DDS is committed to creating cutting-edge solutions that empower individuals and streamline their everyday lives. This integration with Google Wallet represents a significant advancement in the field of digital identification, offering a secure and efficient way for people to access their identification documents.”
To obtain a digital version of the Georgia License or ID on Android devices, individuals need to open or download the Google Wallet app, follow through by tapping ‘Add to Wallet’, choose ‘ID Card’, select Georgia as their state, and complete the verification process with Georgia DDS.
The digital IDs are accepted at certain TSA PreCheck® checkpoints at participating airports across the nation. The procedure to present the digital ID involves holding the smartphone near the checkpoint reader. Post authorization using the phone’s unlock method, the necessary information is released from the device, thus eliminating the need to hand over any personal device during the process.
