Georgia DDS Implements Modernized CDL Skills Testing Statewide

Georgia's Department of Driver Services (DDS) has transitioned all commercial driver license (CDL) road testing in the state to a streamlined modernized skills test that the agency says will make obtaining a CDL more efficient without sacrificing safety. In a news release issued June 16, 2026, DDS announced that the modernization, created by the American Association of Motor Vehicle Administrators and approved by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration, revises two parts of the traditional three-part skills test to better reflect the tasks commercial drivers perform daily.
The new procedure retains the familiar three segments – a Vehicle Inspection, Basic Control Skills test and road test – but updates the first two. Under the revised Vehicle Inspection, candidates inspect fewer items and may use a checklist from the state’s CDL study guide to ensure nothing is missed. Instead of naming every component under the hood, drivers focus on safety‑related elements and demonstrate the same walk‑around inspection they would perform before a work day. Likewise, the Basic Control Skills portion has been condensed to a smaller layout that tests four maneuvers: forward stop, straight-line backing, forward offset tracking and reverse offset backing.
DDS Commissioner Angelique B. McClendon said the changes are intended to “stringent and modernize” the CDL exam while maintaining high standards. “Applicants are tested on real‑world scenarios that all focus on safety‑critical items,” McClendon said, noting that the redesigned test agency noted that the improvements build on broader efforts to modernize driver licensing, including the launch of digital driver licenses and IDs for smartphones..
Applicants should be aware that the modernization does not change eligibility requirements or the format of the road test. The release encourages prospective CDL drivers to study the updated CDL manual and use the online resources at dds.georgia.gov. The new system is now standard at all Georgia testing sites.
