Free Car Seat Checks in Erie, Suffolk, Putnam, and Dutchess counties

BUFFALO, N.Y. — The Governor’s Traffic Safety Committee (GTSC) announced today a series of free car seat checks across Erie, Suffolk, Putnam, and Dutchess counties as part of its ongoing safety initiative.

Certified child passenger safety technicians will be on hand to assist parents and caregivers in Erie County on May 13 at Northtown Toyota in Amherst and on May 20 at Sweet Home High School in Buffalo and Union Fire Company -- District 2 in West Seneca. For more information regarding these locations, contact Deputy Trevor Williams at (716) 858-2706 or [email protected].

In Suffolk County, the safety checks will be conducted on May 13 at Suffolk County Hauppauge Fire Department, on May 20 at Brookhaven Safety Town in Holtsville, and by appointment at the NYS Police Troop L HQ in East Farmingdale. Parents and caregivers are advised to contact Kim Dono at (631) 854-8478 or [email protected] for the Hauppauge location. For Holtsville and East Farmingdale, contact Karen Harper at (631) 451-5335 or [email protected], and Sgt James Walters at (631) 756-3389 or [email protected] respectively.

Residents of Putnam and Dutchess counties can avail of these services on May 13 at Mahopac Fire Department and on May 20 at Beacon Elk's Lodge. For inquiries, Pete Dandreano can be reached at (914) 497-2120 or [email protected].

These events are part of a year-long campaign in which state and local law enforcement agencies, in collaboration with community safety partners, offer free car seat inspections. Trained technicians use the “Learn, Practice, and Explain” model to instruct parents and caregivers on the correct choice and installation of car seats, ensuring safe and appropriate use at all times.

For those unable to attend these events, appointments can be made with a local fitting station. More information on upcoming car seat check events is available at the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) website, which also provides additional data on car seats and booster seats, including installation guidance and car seat recommendations.
