Delaware Registration Began October 31, 2022, for DMV's Low-Digit Tag Lottery
The Delaware Department of Transportation (DelDOT) reminds motorists that registration for the state's low-digit tag lottery will begin on October 31, 2022.
The lottery was established for decades and offered a chance for Delawareans to receive an "eligible" low-digit tag number for their vehicle. The DMV has issued more than 12,000 eligible numbers since the program began.
To be eligible for the lottery, a vehicle must be owned by the registered owner or be leased by the registered owner under a contract that requires the payment of annual use tax on the vehicle, which provides for registration with DelDOT.
The registration period will last from October 31, 2022, through November 7, 2022, at 5 p.m., when all applications must be received by DMV offices throughout Delaware.
All applicants will be notified in writing by January 9, 2023, whether they were selected through the lottery process or not selected at all during this round of registration. Those who are not selected can re-enter the next year's lottery process by registering their vehicles during the same time period each year until they are selected or until they no longer wish to continue participating in this program.
In the registration process, applicants must designate the type of tag they seek from among several categories.
- PV - 5 Digit – Vehicle Weight under 10,000 lbs.
- T - Trailers come in three main types: utility, flatbed, and non-camping.
- PC - A car that weighs less than 10,000 pounds when fully loaded.
- C - Commercial
- RT - Recreational trailers include campers and horse or livestock carriers of at least 5,000 pounds.
- MC for a motorcycle for 55cc's above
Ultimately, the automated system is the easiest way to enter the lottery: no bureaucracy and no phone calls. Although you can still register by mail, that requires a trip to the MVA and several months (up to two years!) before receiving your low-digit registration tag.
Registration by email is being considered, but if you don't already have an account with the MVA, you'll need to register for one to communicate with them via email. You might want to register now—the registration site is only available in English now.
