Deadline For Californians to Get REAL ID License Almost Here

In response to the growing number of people who don't have the proper documents to secure a state-issued driver's license, California is launching a campaign to encourage residents to apply for the card. The state is also touting the convenient online application and appointment process.
Getting the documents to secure a license has been daunting for many people in California. Due to the deadline approaching, many appointments have become available. Although summer vacations are over, many people will be traveling next year for the holidays. The Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) encourages people to get the necessary documents to secure a license so they can quickly board a plane.
The deadline for obtaining a license in California and the rest of the country was moved to 2023 due to the pandemic outbreak. In addition, the state's COVID-19 restrictions made it more difficult for residents to visit the DMV. While the deadline is still six months away, people in California should get their REAL ID soon.
According to the data released by the state's Department of Motor Vehicles, over 14 million people in California have gotten a Real ID license as of September. This is an increase of over two million from last year.
In April, Steve Gordon, the director of the Department of Motor Vehicles, said that the agency had made obtaining a Real ID license easier and faster by implementing an online application and appointment system. He noted that the system had reduced the time it takes to process an application and allowed the agency to serve more customers.
Although Real ID isn't required for most people to travel, the state still encourages people to get the card. If you have a U.S. passport, you can still use it to board a plane or visit a federal facility. However, minors are not required to fly with this type of ID.
Officials noted that anyone in California who can show proof of their legal presence in the U.S. using one of the accepted documents is eligible to apply for a Real ID license. Also, people who are receiving Temporary Protection Status or DACA can apply. In March, the agency warned residents about a scam involving fake text messages asking for personal information such as their Social Security number or driver's license number.
To apply for a REAL ID, you must visit your local DMV and bring some documentation. These include a valid U.S. Passport or birth certificate, proof of your social security number, and proof of California residency.
