DC DMV Updates: Labor Day Closures and Clean Hands Law Policy Change

District of Columbia residents planning to visit the Department of Motor Vehicles (DC DMV) over the Labor Day weekend should be aware of upcoming service interruptions. According to the DC DMV’s newsroom, all DMV service centers, road test sites and adjudication services will be closed on Saturday, Aug. 30 and Monday, Sept. 1, in observance of Labor Day. Normal business operations will resume on Tuesday, Sept. 2. While offices are closed, customers can still access many services through the DC DMV website and free mobile app, including license renewals, records requests and some vehicle services.

In addition to announcing the holiday closures, the agency recently modified a policy that is particularly significant for residents who were previously unable to renew or obtain driver licenses due to outstanding fines and fees. The DC DMV will no longer prevent residents from applying for a new or renewed driver license because of failing to meet the requirements of the Clean Hands Law. The Clean Hands Law prohibits individuals with debts exceeding $100 to the District from receiving government services. By removing this barrier at the DMV, officials aim to ensure that residents can maintain valid driving credentials while they address outstanding obligations. Motorists should note that other DC agencies may still enforce the Clean Hands Law for their services, and paying off debts remains important. The change only ensures that licensing applications at DC DMV will no longer be denied solely on this basis.

Customers who need to manage tasks such as renewing a driver license, updating a vehicle registration or checking Real ID eligibility are encouraged to use the DC DMV’s online services ahead of the holiday closure. The department’s mobile app provides convenient access to more than 50 services and allows customers to upload documents, pay fees, and even request a limited‑purpose driver license without visiting a service center. After Labor Day, service centers are expected to return to normal hours, but appointment slots may fill quickly as demand increases. Residents should plan ahead by scheduling appointments online, ensuring they bring the proper identification documents and verifying their Real ID status.
