Chip seal work begins June 29 on Wyoming Highway 352 near Cora

The Wyoming Department of Transportation (WYDOT) is advising drivers in Sublette County to expect delays on State Highway 352 as crews begin chip sealing Cora Road next week.  In a June 26 news release, the agency announced that chip seal operations will start Monday, June 29, and continue for about a week, weather permitting.  The work is part of a broader pavement preservation project that resurfaced and overlaid portions of Highway 352 last summer; the final step is to apply a protective layer of gravel and asphalt emulsion followed by a fog coat to seal the surface and extend its life【13285798734852†L33-L56】.

Highway 352, also known as Cora Road, runs from U.S. 189 near the town of Daniel north toward the community of Cora.  WYDOT’s chip seal project covers 4.20 miles from milepost 0.00 at the south end of the highway to milepost 4.20 near Cora.  During the week of June 29, motorists should anticipate single-lane traffic controlled by flaggers and pilot cars.  Drivers may experience delays of 10 to 20 minutes as crews apply the chip seal and allow it to set.  WYDOT urges motorists to slow down, obey signs and directions from flaggers, and avoid driving on the loose gravel at high speeds【13285798734852†L33-L56】.

A chip seal involves spraying a thin layer of asphalt emulsion on the road and then covering it with small aggregate chips.  After the emulsion cures, crews sweep away excess aggregate and apply a fog coat of diluted emulsion to lock in the chips.  This combination seals small cracks, improves skid resistance and protects the underlying pavement from water and sun damage.  WYDOT says the chip seal and fog coat together will preserve the new asphalt that was placed on Cora Road last summer.  It is normal for some loose chips to remain for a few days after the work, and drivers are encouraged to slow down to prevent windshield damage and to give the road surface time to stabilize【13285798734852†L33-L56】.

WYDOT thanks the traveling public for their patience and cooperation during the maintenance work.  The agency reminds drivers that roadwork schedules can change due to weather or equipment issues, so they should check wyoroad.info or call 511 for current road conditions.  Motorists can also sign up for project alerts via WYDOT’s updated 511 mobile app.  For questions about the Cora Road chip seal project, contact District 3 Public Relations Specialist Stephanie Harsha at 307-352-3065 or the District 3 office in Rock Springs.  The Department urges everyone to buckle up, share the road with construction crews and allow extra travel time when passing through the work zone.
