After a summer of renovation, the California Department of Motor Vehicles has announced that the Capitola field office will reopen its doors on Monday, Aug. 25. The office at 4200 Capitola Road closed June 13 so crews could refresh the space with new flooring, fresh paint and updated furniture【120841645076900†L278-L301】. When the doors open at 8 a.m., customers will be greeted by a brighter and more modern workspace designed to improve comfort and efficiency.

During the closure, the DMV encouraged Capitola-area residents to use the agency’s extensive online services or visit nearby field offices. The state DMV reminds the public that many tasks, including driver license renewals, vehicle registration renewals, and address changes, can be completed online without visiting an office【120841645076900†L278-L301】. Customers who must visit an office can use the DMV’s Service Advisor at dmv.ca.gov/serviceadvisor to determine whether they need an appointment or can walk in for their transaction.

The DMV is also urging Californians to prepare now for the upcoming federal REAL ID enforcement deadline. Beginning May 7, 2025, passengers who plan to use a state‑issued driver license or ID to board domestic flights or enter certain federal facilities must present a REAL ID card or other federally approved identification. To obtain a REAL ID, applicants must bring proof of identity, proof of Social Security number and two documents showing California residency. The DMV recommends assembling documents ahead of time and using the online REAL ID checklist to ensure a smooth appointment.

Digital services continue to expand as well. Customers can create a MyDMV account to receive paperless vehicle registration and driver license renewal notices, reducing mail clutter and helping the DMV go green【120841645076900†L278-L301】. The agency’s mobile app also offers appointment scheduling, registration renewal and other features.

As Capitola residents welcome back their local DMV, officials hope the improved facility and growing suite of online services will make doing DMV business quicker and more convenient. Whether you need to renew a license, register a car, apply for a REAL ID or simply have questions, the DMV encourages you to start your transaction online, visit Service Advisor to plan your visit and take advantage of appointment options. The refurbished Capitola field office stands ready to assist with in‑person needs when the doors open Aug. 25.
