California DMV’s specialized options for seniors over 70

These are for people who have difficulty completing specific tests and exams such as vision, written and oral examinations, or driving skills tests due to eye difficulties or other physical conditions that can affect their ability to see or speak clearly.

The DMV has several options and capabilities for people unable to complete these tests or exams. These options include having a licensed driver take the test on their behalf, an “agent” in the DMV handbook. If parking, road, and traffic signs do not show clearly – such as on a highway with no arrows or signs – then anyone who cannot read and understand traffic signs at least 20 feet away may be able to get an agent to take the test on their behalf.

“If you have a permanent visual impairment that makes it impossible for you to read the traffic signs 20 feet away, then you can get an agent to take the written test on your behalf instead of doing it yourself,” said DMV District 1 Communications Manager Jessica Lopez. She added, “This would also mean they will sign the log book on your behalf.”

The DMV encourages people to register in person if they use this opportunity. When getting their driver's license, seniors over 70 can indicate their need for an agent if they want to take the driving test with a licensed driver rather than alone.

“If you need an agent, then you can get one at the DMV if you go there in person, or if you call or go online to make an appointment,” said Lopez. “Any adult aged 70 and older can do this. You will be able to give the agent a list of all the requirements for that test.”

If you need a reader to take the written test on your behalf, then they can give you two options: either they will read the questions aloud, and you will read the answers too; or another possibility is that they can let you know when to go forward, stop, turn right and left.

Some people who are unable to do either of these things may be able to get a driver’s license with an “I Drive Safely” card.
